In 2025, Kwai Chung Park was recognised by the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) with the Excellence in Public Development – Merit Award, in collaboration with the Architectural Services Department. The award acknowledges the project’s success in delivering a renewed, multi-functional community open space that balances everyday usability, cost-effective public realm strategies and a strong connection to the harbour setting.
Kwai Chung Park is a renewed, multi-functional community open space near the shoreline, planned for everyday use while capturing impressive sea views. The design organises jogging paths, play and fitness areas, lawns, terraces and lookout points along a clear circulation loop to support daily recreation and family activities.
Cost-effective public realm strategies use low-cost, durable and recycled materials. Corten steel provides a robust, low-maintenance finish that weathers naturally and reduces repainting, while bamboo is used as renewable screening and feature cladding that is fast-growing, lightweight, modular to replace and economical over the asset life cycle.
Existing mature trees are retained to provide shade and comfort, with lawns and activity areas positioned to open view corridors. Generous planting and permeable surfaces improve drainage, reduce heat and create a healthier microclimate. The design leverages existing levels, edges and view lines to create terraces, curved routes and a sequence of lookout moments, culminating in a signature sea-view swing deck that turns a simple rest point into an engaging harbour-focused experience.
